OPUS - In Velo Veritas

Things are coming along nicely for Fort Langley Cyclery. The shop is starting to look useable again – the ceiling is drywalled and the holes in the brick are patched – and we’re getting the rest of our product line in place.
New to the lineup is Opus, a Canadian bicycle manufacturer celebrating its tenth year in production with an expanded line of bicycles. Opus has noticed the recent evolution of urban cycling, as bikes become a more common form of transportation and as people look for new ways to stay healthy. The 2010 line of bicycles includes 18 models for “urban cyclists,” in addition to their well-established road bikes.

One of our favourite pairings is the classy men’s Lugano (charcoal grey) and the ultra-elegant women’s Nuovella (powder blue). They feature full fenders, chain guards, and an integrated rear rack, internal gearing, and roller brakes, for a clean, virtually maintenance-free bicycle. It’s a comfortable bike with a smooth, silky ride, and arguably the most beautiful bike you’ll ever sit on. You should come on by, once we’re open, and take one for a spin.

  1. Hey! This is Peter and Amanda's sister. Amanda sent me your blog address and I am so so so excited for you all!
I love the idea of the dutch bikes. I just recently got back from Europe where I spent some time in Holland, did some biking and the bikes I used were great. Perfect for commuting which I understand is a very important part of your store. I also understand that the lower mainland is getting super bike friendly which is totally exciting.
Secondly, the rain clothing line is a great idea! I come from Terrace where we get a lot of rain too, and the jackets look so nice. I'd get one to wear even if i wasnt cycling, their beautiful!
I just recently read a book called "Bicycle Diaries" by Davie Byrne - he does (or did I'm not sure) a lot of overseas travelling with his line and work and almost always took his bike with him as a mode of transportation. He had one of those folding bikes. What are your take on those?

I hope that your plans are coming right along!

  2. Annette,

Thanks for your enthusiastic support. It's great to see friends-of-friends, who happen to like cycling also, get excited about the shop.

The folding bikes present an interesting question. I've always thought that they were great for big cities, when your commute is half on transit and half on foot. You know, take a little bike along, so you don't have to walk so much. Also, they're great for small apartments with tight storage. The question for us is, when is Langley considered metropolitan enough to require something like a folding bike? Maybe, right now, it just seems to soon. We have looked at a few models, and liked them, but for now, they'll probably just be occassional showpieces rather than regular stock. Of course, customers could raise enough of a fuss to change our minds.

    Cheers.

  4. Hi Chris.

We'll be selling Opus, obviously, and pretty much anything you want from Fourth Floor Distribution, including Batavus, Pashley, Biomega, Abici, and others. Check out their catalogue at www.onthefourth.com. We're still in talks with other bike brands as well, so we'll keep everyone posted.

    Cheers.
